Fall Semester 2012

The history tutoring center is now open for the fall semester of 2012.

Our hours are Monday and Wednesday 9:00am – noon, 1:00pm – 6:00pm.

Tuesday and Thursday: 09:00am – 5:00pm

Friday: 09:00am – noon.

The tutors are happy to help both undergrad and grad students with things as varied as studying skills, note taking, writing papers, preparing for tests and exams, figuring out thesis statements, and discussing arguments and/or content.

Due to times of exceptionally high demand and for the sake of better organizing the history tutoring center, we now require that appointments be made in advance. This can be done either via email at history.tutoring@csuohio.edu or by phone: 216.687.3921. If you call outside our office hours, or if we are unable to answer the phone when you call, please feel free to leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. If writing an email or leaving a message, please let us know what time(s) would work well for you. This makes it easier to quickly confirm a time slot for you.

You are also welcome to come by our office on the 13th floor in Rhodes Tower (Room RT1331) and set up an appointment in person. Depending on what you wish to see a tutor about, we may even be able to help you out without a prior appointment (time and schedules permitting).

Appointments are divided into 30 minute slots. If more time is needed, it may be necessary to make another appointment for a later time. If, however, the slot immediately following your appointment is not already booked, it should be possible to extend your appointment further. Longer appointments can also be prearranged at the discretion of the tutors and will be based on individual need and overall conditions (how busy the tutoring center is that day/week). It may be harder to secure a longer appointment during the weeks immediately prior to midterms, finals, and paper deadlines. It should be much easier to arrange something during other weeks.

If you need help with a paper, it is very helpful if you email us a copy of your work a couple of days prior to your appointment. This gives us time to read through your paper and make well-thought-out comments and suggestions that we can then discuss during your appointment. This is an option that we have made available for your benefit as it both saves you time and enables us to give you even better feedback. If you simply show up to your appointment with your paper in hand, remember that a big part of the appointment will consist of the tutor reading through your paper. A half hour can pass by surprisingly quickly then and we will have that much less time to talk about your paper and give you in-person advice and/or answer questions.

Please feel free to ask us questions, whether it be here on the website, by email, by phone, or in person.

Remember, the tutoring center is your resource. Our main goal is to help unleash your own unique potential in studying history and doing well in class. We are not here to give you the proverbial answer(s), but will help you in learning how to use the tools of the trade. An added bonus is that these tools can be applied to many other fields and activities than history. For instance, some of the tools of history include learning efficient and good ways of accessing and communicating information, and the ability to form and develop arguments buttressed by verifiable sources. The wider application of such skills can easily be imagined.

So come and see us about anything related to history and history courses that you are confused about, need help with, or simply wish to talk about.
